Summary0000535: Game freezes when I click save or save-as
Description

Since the patch on Dec. 9th, after playing the game for a bit (less than 30-minutes) I click -esc- and then save...game locked-up (froze), and I was unable to click on any buttons in he menu...nothing responded. Waited approx. 10-minutes, nothing changed, killed the process via 'task manager'. Verified files via Steam. Logged back into game, played approx. 10-15 minutes and tried to save again -- this second time the game hung-up again, BUT I could click the buttons on the menu screen (exit, save, save-as, etc.) but when I did a window opened indicating 'Error: game already saving'. Game stayed in that state for approx. 15-minutes, and I killed it again with task manager. Game 'version': 0.7.4.3BBoF4 'Vanilla' Community Edition -- no mods, and I NEVER use cloud save.

Not sure if this is tied to the 'freezing' when I try to save the game, or a completely separate issue: logged into game this AM, played around my house in-game for about 15-minutes, then had the thought to walk down road to an adjoining 'sector', with the thought that loading/unloading stuff that's being rendered might affect original issue. Game had micro-stutter as I moved from one sector of the map to another (did not 'fast-travel, walked manually). Cut down a few trees and gathered logs, etc. As I walked back to my house the game stopped when I crossed sector boundary and displayed small window indicating 'Loading Content'...and the terrain was BARE. No trees, grass,plants...nothing. I could see my structures in distance, but everything else was gone. Waited approx. 3-minutes to see if assets would 'pop' into view after being loaded, but nothing. Continued walking toward my house and my avatar gradually sank into ground (as though plane he was walking on did not match the surface/ground I could see). Clicked esc and then exit, and no when asked if I wanted to save game, and the game locked up again and I had to use task-manager to kill it.

Should I create a new 'bug-report' for what I just described?

I followed the 'work-around' instructions you posted in comments for bug-report 534 (increased worker-thread count to 5 in game's cfg-file), and it 'seems' to have fixed the freezing issue.

My computer CPU has only 4-cores...will increasing the worker-thread count to 5 cause issues (over-working, stressing CPU, etc.)? I am computer-illiterate (I use computer but know little about how the 'magic' happens inside), so I am dependent on the honesty of others (like you) in telling me what such work-arounds may do to my old computer...I don't have the knowledge about computers to be able to know whether using this work-around will cause issues down the road (failure of hardware, etc.), and need to know what the chances are that it can harm my computer so I may make a decision as to whether it's worth doing just to play a game.

Theoretically it can hurt performance in game a little bit. It's unlikely to actually cause your computer any issues, and a little worse in-game performance is better than not working at all.
